Rumi's Restaurant highly commended at Asian Curry Awards
The owners of a curry house have tasted glory after being highly commended in a national Rumi's Restaurant highly commended at Asian Curry Awards
Rumi's Restaurant in Beverley was up against spicy competition from across the rest of the UK for the 'Best Newcomer Award' at the Asian Curry Awards on Sunday.
The diner, which is run by owners Sarah Day and Sham Alom, opened in August 2015 and was highly commended in its category at a plush Mayfair hotel in London, where the award ceremony was hosted by the BBC News presenter Kate Silverton.
Miss Day said: "It was quite a posh affair actually and it was quite surreal.
"We went down without any expectations of winning really, we were just novices honest up against these big names, so it was mind-blowing really.
"We just want to shout from the rooftops about it, to be honest."
Miss Day said that Rumi's Restaurant had broken with traditional Indian diner trends in a bid to offer hungry customers an "authentic" experience.
She said: "I think we've won because we've tried to be different.
"We feel that the curry house culture in this country has become too westernised. Let's get back to authentic Indian food."
"People have been eating the same kind of thing for a while now, and the culture's become about falling out of the pub at midnight and then stumbling into a curry house. We want to get away from that image."
"We wanted to modernise it and bring it up to date with the 21st century."Source - Hull Daily Mail
